As the web becomes one big party there are more and more social bookmarking sites springing up every single day. Most use them to share things with friends or keep in touch with each other. The select few use them to gain traffic and exposure to their websites.

What is a social bookmarking site? It is a site where members can share links or web pages with each other. When such a website has thousand of users, such as digg, the mere mention of a websites can direct thousands of visitors to it in a relatively short amount of time. This is where online marketers see the potential. They realize they can gain plenty of visitors and get good exposure for free by utilizing the phenomenon. What most of them do not realize is the visitors coming from these social bookmarking websites are not really interested in anything commercial they have to offer. They are there just for their own amusement which means they will rarely buy or do anything.

This fact has been proven time and time again by several reputable people. The amount of traffic coming to a website does not matter. However the amount of relevant traffic is important. This is where social bookmarking fails. There is no relevancy. Users are not actively looking to participate in any topic in particular. They visit out of curiosity.

Marketers need to realize social bookmarking should be left to the sociable. It does not provide any worth from a marketing stand point and should not be exploited for those purposes.
