You’ve heard about social bookmarking. And you’d love to tap into its power to bring more traffic to your blog. But where to start? Read on to find out about stumble upon traffic.

StumbleUpon is serendipity in action. And you can tap into it and have thousands of people literally stumble upon your blog in a very short time — if you play it right.

What does it take? First, you better have a cool blog with great information, information that is interesting and tightly focused, but not too topical. Other social bookmarking sites may like you to keep up with day-to-day news stories. StumbleUpon prefers information that will be fresh and relevant months from now.

And that’s good news — because it means that once you’ve made the effort, stumble upon traffic will keep flowing. Compare that with the kind of traffic that relies on a news story. Once that story leaves the front pages of the paper, no one will want to read about it anymore.

Second, you need to sign up at stumbleupon.com and install their toolbar.

How does stumble upon traffic work? It’s basically a system where people will literally stumble upon your blog and rate it. The higher it gets rated, the more people will stop by to check it out. And what kinds of blogs get rated well? Cool blogs with interesting information, especially information that is closely targeted to your niche market.

That’s another area where the various social bookmarking sites differ. Digg likes mass appeal. Stumbleupon likes information that’s really interesting — to a focused niche audience.

Of course, social bookmarking is always a two-way street. So you need to go out there and do some stumbling of your own. And yes, you should be rating other people’s blogs as well.

One important piece of advice: Play nice. Make sure to give high marks if you like a blog, but don’t trash it if you don’t. Just move on. You don’t need to make enemies that may come back to haunt you. It’s like that old rule we learned as kids: If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

So go ahead and start stumbling — and before you know it, stumble upon traffic will bring many new visitors to your blog.
